April is National Poetry Month a wonderful celebration of poetry! And is there a more amazing literary delight than a poem? I write prose and love doing so but there is nothing more challenging or rewarding than getting everything one wants to say condensed down into a few lines, packed full of images - saves energy - and are we not all for that these days?
National Poetry Month was first introduced in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets as a way increasing awareness and appreciation for poetry. It is celebrated every April in the United States and, since 1999, in Canada as well. For more interesting facts and history about National Poetry Month please see National PoetryMonth - Wikipedia.
If you are a teacher of young people write poetry with your students this month as a way to put more "Spring" back into everyone's step. Here is a great site for lesson plans ReadWriteThink which also includes links to other poetry sites and information.
I too am taking the poetry challenge of one poem a day - or more - and will be sharing them here on FFTMW aka my blog.
Happy writing all!
