Poem 9 - Poem a Day -

Prickly Pear Heart and the Watcher

She was a prickly pear, luscious and tender
But with barbed wire fence around her heart
Had but only one true love, who turned into thin air
We all knew he was no good right from the start

With a barbed wire fence around her heart
She raised horses and turtle doves
We all knew he was no good right from the start
Still she lived on the ranch they'd dreamed of

She raised horses and turtle doves
Drank wine from California long into the night
Still she lived on the ranch they'd dreamed of
Watching fiery skies and waiting for a sign

Drank red wine from California long into the night
No one tried to get next to her, no one even dared
Watching fiery skies and waiting for a sign
There was one who watched her, who wasn't scared

No one tried to get next to her, no one even dared
But one night at a community dance someone took her hand
There was one who watched her, who wasn't scared to try
For she was a prickly pear, luscious and tender
